Karabük

Nestled in the forested valleys of the Western Black Sea region, Karabük is home to one of the most extraordinary historic townscapes in the world. Its jewel is Safranbolu — a UNESCO World Heritage Site of breathtaking completeness, where hundreds of beautifully preserved Ottoman timber mansions line cobblestone streets that have changed little in three centuries. Yet Karabük offers far more than Safranbolu alone: the remarkable Roman mosaics of Hadrianapolis ancient city, the dramatic canyon walks of Tokatlı and İncekaya, the vast primeval forests of Yenice — one of Europe's most ecologically significant woodland ecosystems — and the underground wonders of Bulak Mencilis Cave all combine to make this province one of the most rewarding and varied destinations in northern Türkiye.

Karabük's Historical Landmarks

  • Safranbolu Historic Town – A UNESCO World Heritage Site of exceptional integrity, where more than a thousand beautifully preserved Ottoman-era timber mansions, hans, mosques, and fountains survive in a townscape of extraordinary historic atmosphere and architectural splendour.

  • Safranbolu Eski Çarşı (Old Bazaar) – The ancient covered market at the heart of Safranbolu's historic quarter, lined with traditional craftsmen's shops, spice sellers, and lokum makers, and still fragrant with the saffron that gave the town its name.

  • Hadrianapolis Ancient City – A remarkable Hellenistic and Roman city near Eskipazar, founded around 320 BC and dubbed the "Zeugma of the Black Sea" for its magnificent floor mosaics depicting animals, mythological figures, and scenes from daily life.

  • İncekaya Aqueduct and Canyon – An imposing late 18th-century Ottoman aqueduct of six great arches spanning the Tokatlı Canyon, built by Grand Vizier İzzet Mehmet Pasha to bring water to Safranbolu, set in a landscape of vertiginous natural beauty.

  • Bulak Mencilis Cave – One of the longest caves in Türkiye, adorned with spectacular stalactites, stalagmites, travertines, and underground rivers, located in the hills above Safranbolu.

  • Yörük Village – A beautifully preserved historic village in the hills above Safranbolu, with traditional Ottoman wooden houses, a tranquil rural atmosphere, and sweeping views over the forested landscape below.

  • Sipahioğlu Mansion – One of Safranbolu's finest and most celebrated historic konak houses, offering an immersive window into the domestic life and architectural craftsmanship of the Ottoman elite.

  • Karabük Yenişehir Clock Tower – A distinctive polygonal clock tower erected in the modern city centre in 1987 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Karabük Iron and Steel Works, a symbol of the city's industrial heritage.
