Mardin

Cascading down a dramatic limestone ridge above the great Mesopotamian plain, Mardin is one of the most visually stunning and historically layered cities in the entire Middle East. Its honey-coloured stone houses, carved medrese façades, and ancient churches and mosques rise in tiers above a landscape that stretches south towards Syria and the ancient rivers of civilisation itself. For millennia a crossroads of Assyrian Christians, Arab Muslims, Syriac monks, Armenians, Kurds, and Turks, Mardin wears its extraordinary multicultural heritage with a grace and beauty that is uniquely its own. From the ancient Roman underground city of Dara to the incomparable 6th-century monastery of Deyrulzafaran, and from the silver-working ateliers of Midyat to the cool valleys and waterfalls hidden in the hills above the plain, Mardin is an experience of rare and unforgettable depth.

Mardin's Historical Landmarks

  • Deyrulzafaran Monastery (Saffron Monastery) – One of the oldest and most magnificent Christian monasteries in the world, founded in the 5th century AD and still an active seat of the Syriac Orthodox Church, its golden stone walls and ancient chapels rising from the hillside just outside Mardin.

  • Dara Ancient City – A remarkable late Roman and Byzantine city with extraordinary subterranean cisterns, rock-cut tombs, tunnel systems, and the ruins of a great necropolis, one of the most significant and least visited archaeological sites in southeastern Türkiye.

  • Mardin Castle – The ancient hilltop fortress that has crowned Mardin's dramatic ridge since antiquity, commanding panoramic views over the rooftops of the old city and the vast Mesopotamian plain stretching to the horizon below.

  • Zinciriye Medrese – A superb 14th-century Artuqid medrese of exquisite carved stonework, whose rooftop terrace offers one of the most celebrated panoramic views over the old city and the plain beyond.

  • Kasımiye Medrese – One of Mardin's largest and most architecturally accomplished historic monuments, a 15th-century Akkoyunlu medrese of exceptional beauty with a domed courtyard, fountain, and intricate stone carving.

  • Midyat – The extraordinary silver-working town at the heart of the Tur Abdin region, famous for its traditional Syriac Christian heritage, ancient stone mansions, remarkable cave museum, and the master craftsmen who continue the centuries-old tradition of telkari silver filigree.

  • Mardin Ulu Camii – A magnificent 12th-century Artuqid mosque with a single minaret of exceptional elegance, one of the finest examples of medieval Islamic architecture in southeastern Türkiye, believed by some scholars to incorporate the remains of an earlier Christian church.

  • Mor Gabriel Monastery – The oldest functioning Christian monastery in the world, founded in 397 AD in the Tur Abdin highlands east of Mardin, a living centre of Syriac Orthodox monasticism and one of the most spiritually resonant sites in Türkiye.
