Kırşehir
Sitting at the ancient crossroads of central Anatolia, Kırşehir is a city of deep spiritual significance, remarkable archaeological heritage, and surprising natural beauty. It is above all the city of Ahi Evran — the 13th-century philosopher, craftsman, and Sufi master whose legacy of social justice and communal solidarity shaped the entire Anatolian world — and of the Bektashi and Alevi traditions that still pulse at the heart of local culture. Yet Kırşehir also rewards the curious traveller with the extraordinary flamingo-filled wetlands of Seyfe Lake, the ancient Bronze Age mound of Kalehöyük, fine Seljuk tombs and mosques, a remarkable Japanese garden, and some of the richest thermal spa waters in all of central Türkiye.
Kırşehir's Historical Landmarks
Ahi Evran Tomb and Külliye – The mausoleum and complex of Ahi Evran Veli, the revered 13th-century philosopher and patron saint of Anatolian craftsmen, one of the most spiritually significant sites in all of central Türkiye and a place of deep pilgrimage for the Alevi and Bektashi traditions.
Kalehöyük Archaeological Site and Japanese Garden – An important Bronze Age settlement mound near Kaman where ongoing Japanese-led excavations have unearthed Iron Age and Hittite remains, accompanied by the Mikasanomiya Memorial Garden — the largest Japanese garden outside Japan — created in honour of the excavations.
Üçayak Church – One of Anatolia's earliest surviving village churches, a Byzantine-era structure of considerable historic significance located near Taburoğlu village in the Kırşehir district.
Kırşehir Castle – A hilltop fortress at the heart of the city, bearing witness to the many civilisations that controlled this strategic central Anatolian crossroads, from the Hittites and Phrygians to the Seljuks and Ottomans.
Cimri (Melik Muzaffer) Tomb – A beautifully carved 13th-century Seljuk kümbet mausoleum built in 1135, one of the finest examples of Anatolian Seljuk funerary architecture in the region.
Seyfe Lake Bird Sanctuary – A vast saline lake and internationally protected Ramsar wetland that hosts one of the world's largest flamingo colonies, alongside nearly 480,000 individual birds of more than 200 species, a site of extraordinary ecological importance.
Terme Thermal Springs – Historic mineral springs of legendary healing reputation, said by local tradition to have been revealed by a miracle of Ahi Evran himself, renowned for their efficacy against heart disease, rheumatism, and skin conditions.
Neşet Ertaş Gönül Sultanları Cultural House – A museum and cultural centre dedicated to the beloved Kırşehir-born folk poet and bard Neşet Ertaş, preserving the living tradition of Anatolian saz music and âşık poetry.
