Sinop
Perched on a dramatic promontory at the northernmost point of Türkiye, Sinop is the Black Sea coast's most captivating city — a place where ancient history, natural grandeur, and the restless energy of the sea converge in a setting of rare and atmospheric beauty. Birthplace of the great philosopher Diogenes and home to one of the Black Sea's finest natural harbours, Sinop has been a city of consequence since antiquity. Its ancient castle walls still embrace the old city, its Ottoman artillery batteries once commanded the sea, and its infamous prison held some of the most celebrated political prisoners in Turkish history. Beyond the city, a landscape of cascading waterfalls, forested cliffs, a unique natural fjord, and the lonely lighthouse at the very tip of Türkiye beckons the adventurous traveller northward to the edge of the continent.

Sinop's Historical Landmarks
Sinop Castle – One of the Black Sea's oldest and most imposing fortresses, founded in the 8th century BC and continuously strengthened through the Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman periods, its great walls still encircling the old city above the harbour.
Sinop Historical Prison – A legendary 19th-century prison of forbidding stone corridors and cramped cells, where some of the most celebrated writers and political thinkers in Turkish history were once held, now open as a haunting and atmospheric museum.
Balatlar Church – A remarkable multi-layered historic structure originally built as a Roman bath, converted to a Byzantine church, then used as a Greek Orthodox monastery during the Ottoman period, one of the most architecturally complex ancient buildings on the Black Sea coast.
Paşa Batteries (Tabyaları) – Imposing 19th-century Ottoman artillery fortifications built during the Russo-Ottoman War, with eleven cannon emplacements overlooking the sea, now restored as a visitor attraction offering dramatic coastal views.
İnceburun Lighthouse – A handsome stone lighthouse erected in 1863 at the very northernmost tip of Türkiye, standing on a dramatic cape of volcanic rock above the open Black Sea, the symbolic end point of the Anatolian landmass.
Erfelek Tatlıca Waterfalls – A breathtaking series of 28 cascading waterfalls set in lush forested hills near Erfelek, one of the most beautiful and serene natural landscapes on the entire Black Sea coast.
Akgöl Nature Park – A serene natural lake and wetland near the city centre, a haven for migratory birds and a beloved local retreat for walking, picnicking, and peaceful lakeside relaxation.
İnaltı Cave – A spectacular stalactite and stalagmite cave near Ayancık, opened to visitors in 1996, whose remarkable natural formations and cool underground atmosphere make it one of the most rewarding cave destinations in the Black Sea region.
